Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are the Alcovisor breathalyzers approved for DOT testing?

Yes.  The Alcovisor Jupiter, Mercury and Mark V devices have been evaluated and approved by NHTSA and they appear on the Conforming Products List as an Evidential Breath Tester for DOT testing.

  • How often should I calibrate the Alcovisor breathalyzers?

According to the manufacturer’s QAP, the Alcovisor breathalyzers must undergo an accuracy check (also referred to as a calibration check), once a month or every 30 days.  It is highly recommended an accuracy check be performed immediately following a positive confirmation test.  An accuracy check (calibration check), is a procedure that checks the device to ensure it is reading accurately.

A calibration is an entirely different procedure.  A calibration is a procedure designed to bring the device back into an acceptable accuracy range. A calibration is required only if the device fails an accuracy check. If the device fails an accuracy check the QAP states you must take the device out of service and immediately perform a calibration.

  • Will the device count-down the :15 Wait Period before a Confirmation Test?

The Alcovisor Jupiter and Mercury devices have a :15 count-down feature that can be enabled. You can access this setting in the Advanced Settings menu. By enabling the :15 count-down feature, the Jupiter and Mercury devices will automatically go into a :15 wait period immediately following a Screening Test result of .020 or greater. When the clock expires, the device will prompt the operator to begin the Confirmation Test.

The Mark V device does not have a :15 count-down feature. In this case, the operator would need to set a timer to fully observe the :15 wait period before administering a second test, which is the confirmation test.

  • What is an Air Blank and how often is an Air Blank performed?

An Air Blank is an internal diagnostic procedure that checks the fuel cell to see if any residual alcohol remains in the fuel cell chamber.  This ensures that no alcohol molecules and vapors are present in the fuel cell at the time of the test.  The Alcovisor Jupiter, Mercury and Mark V devices are designed to automatically perform an Air Blank procedure before every Screening and Confirmation test.  The Air Blank result must read .000, indicating the fuel cell is alcohol free, before the operator can continue with the test.

  • Can I upload test records to a database?

The Alcovisor devices come with USB cables that allow the operator to connect to a PC.  The optional software package enables the data to be transferred from the device into a searchable database.

  • How many test records can be stored in the device's memory?

All Alcovisor devices are designed to store test records in the device’s internal memory.

    • The Jupiter device is able to store up to 20,000 test records
    • The Mercury and Mark V devices may store up to 10,000 test records.

The operator may search the internal memory and reprint the test result.
